Lesson Three: Jesus' death and resurrection

Bible reading: Matthew 27:27-66, 28

Warm up / welcome game:
We played a helping puzzle game, each sharing pieces to help everyone solve their jigsaw puzzles.

Memory verse:
Our memory verse for this unit of work about the Life of Jesus is "Jesus will come back" an abbreviation of Acts 1:11.

Telling the story:
We used pictures to recap what we've already learned about Jesus (his birth, his baptism, riding into Jerusalem on the donkey, etc.)  Then we talked about the people who did not like Jesus and who decided to kill him.  We talked about how sad Jesus' friends were when he died and how amazed Mary was when she mistook him for the gardener near his tomb - Jesus is alive again!

Craft time:
We made a picture of the tomb in the garden.  (I found the template on the internet but did not note the reference - if it's yours let me know and I'll link directly to it.)

Lesson Two: Jesus' baptism

Bible Reading: Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:1-11

This week we're learning about John the Baptist telling people about God and Jesus going to him and being baptised.

Warm up / welcome game: Find the dove
We started our lesson playing with pictures of lots of different kinds of birds.  We talked about their names, we looked for yellow birds and birds that can swim and then last of all we found a beautiful dove.  Guess what - there's a dove in our story!

Memory verse:
We're still working on our memory verse, remembering "Jesus will come back." based on Acts 1:11.

Attention grabber:
  • Has anyone seen a person being baptised before? Can you tell me what happens?
  • When someone is baptised, they say that they believe in God, they love God, they want to serve Him, they are sorry for the wrong things they have done, and they are completely dipped under the water very briefly.
  • Have a look at my peg doll. We are going to pretend that he is going to be baptised.
Telling the story:
We looked at pictures of the scene as we listened to the story.

Craft time:
  • Make a happy face from coloured paper to show how God felt when Jesus was baptised
  • Make a dove stick puppet (white cardboard with white paper wings made by folding paper into a concertina fold)
