Today’s story is about two people called Joseph and Mary. They were chosen by God to be parents of a very special person in the Bible called Jesus. Jesus was the son of God!
Warm up / welcome game: Christmas card puzzles
• Christmas card nativity scenes cut into three pieces, mixed up and the class ‘solve the puzzles’
• What can you see in the pictures? <baby, stable, animals, angels, shepherds, mum, dad, etc.> What is this story about?
Our memory verse for this unit of work about the Life of Jesus is an abbreviation of Acts 1:11 which says:
"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking at the sky? Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. But he will come back in the same way you saw him go." (NIrV)
Everyone will get a copy of the memory verse to stick on their refrigerator and hopefully over the next three weeks will remember it!
Attention grabber:
- A picture of a baby.
- Has anyone seen a baby before? Have a look at my picture / photo.
- What can you tell me about a new baby? (They are very small, very fragile, cannot do much, very precious)
- Today’s lesson is about a very special new-born baby in the Bible. He was the son of God!
Telling the story:
We will be using a model nativity scene to tell the story. Everyone gets to hold pieces and help tell the story. We may need to add extra peg dolls to be the angels and the shepherds!!
Song time:
- “Who is he in yonder stall” (Colin Buchanan: King of Christmas CD, Track 17)
- "Away in a manger"
- We will be making cardboard stars and decorating them with glitter.
- Cut and Paste Nativity Scene from Danielle's Place [craft sticks, pictures of Mary, Joseph, Jesus, etc.]
To help us remember the wise men followed a star everyone gets a small star on a stick (tiny magic wands from the party section of the supermarket actually!) With the Bible text attached "Where is the child who has been born to be king of the Jews? When we were in the east, we saw his star. Now we have come to worship him." Matthew 2:2
